Interesting facts. I recall during the Civil War playing cards was popular with soldiers (some played chess too).

Interesting! I suppose the same ‘pros’ made cards appealing for those troops too- easy to carry an cheap! I imagine hauling a chess board and pieces would be a bit tricky, though…
